Self Improvement Tips - Make a Start Even If You Don’t Know Where You’re Going

Many people believe that those who achieve what they want in life know, before they begin a project, not only where they are going, but exactly how they will get there - that they travel straight through to the conclusion by well-planned steps. This, however, is rarely the case. Ask any successful person if they went straight to their goal, and you’ll probably get a chuckle followed by the long and winding story of what really happened.

It is true that successful people know where they’re going, but very few start with a clear idea of how they’ll get there. Napoleon Hill, author of the seminal work on success, Think and Grow Rich, has called this clarity and focus about the goal one’s “Definite Major Purpose.”

Those who have worked through their fears realize that if they start toward their definite major purpose with whatever resources they have, the methods for achieving it will inevitably appear, as needed, as they move forward. In fact, taking the original steps toward the goal, no matter how tentative, is often the only way in which the plan for attaining it will appear.

Each of us comes to this process of growth and healing with his or her unique temperament, values, and background. Like all of us, you are a product of your early life and your own unique experiences with victory and defeat. If you’re like most people, you have your own fears and barriers to growth. But if you make a start, and then keep going, no matter what twists, turns, and surprises confront you (and there will be some, no doubt), this internal journey will truly allow you to and prepare you to face your future with power and acceptance.
