This is an equation that tells you how many calories your body needs to stay at the same weight. Once you have this you can start subtracting calories. You want to have a weight loss goal when you start this. It is important to understand that to lose a pound you must lose 3500 calories. Now that you have this information you can determine how many calories needed each day to lose weight. If you want to lose one pound a week you will have to lose 500 calories a day. If you want to lose 2 pounds a week you must lose 1,000 calories per day.
